Hyundai Motor Co. has hired Jin-woo Lee, a research leader in self-driving technology development at General Motors Co. for the past 11 years, to run its advanced driver-assistance system development effort.
Reuters says Lee, 47, will head Hyundai’s new Intelligent Safety Technology Center in South Korea, effective today. The facility will coordinate research between Hyundai and its Kia Motors affiliate on artificial intelligence and other capabilities needed by autonomous vehicles.
Hyundai-Kia intend to introduce highly automated vehicles by 2020 and fully self-driving-capable cars by 2030. To meet those goals, analysts tell Reuters, Hyundai-Kia should quickly form alliances with other tech companies—as many competing carmakers have already done—to cut costs and accelerate development of automated driving systems.
