Tesla to Test Self-Driving Platooning for Heavy Trucks

Tesla Inc. is in discussions with the states of California and Nevada about on-road testing of a long-haul truck that drives itself and follows a lead vehicle, Reuters reports.

Tesla said a year ago and again in April that it was developing a heavy-duty, all-electric truck and would unveil a prototype in September. But the company has not publicly announced plans to equip the vehicle with a variant of the self-driving Autopilot system it continues to develop for its electric passenger vehicles.

Several developers, including Alphabet, Uber and Volvo Trucks, are testing so-called platooning systems. The concept involves a human-piloted lead truck that is closely followed by several self-driving trucks. It isn’t clear if Tesla envisions full automation for the led truck too.
