Toyota Motor Corp. says its sales of hybrid vehicles surpassed 10 million units at the end of January. More than 3 million of the total volume occurred in the U.S.
The 10 million-unit mark came nine months after Toyota’s hybrid sales reached 9 million. The company currently markets 34 hybrid models.
Toyota debuted its first high-volume hybrid model, the Prius, 20 years ago. The company estimates its hybrids, when compared with equivalent conventional vehicles, have so far emitted 77 million fewer tons of carbon dioxide and burned about 7.7 million fewer gallons of gasoline.
