Carmakers must be able to simultaneously cater to younger buyers who embrace electronic technologies and older customers who may crave simpler controls and the ability to turn off some features entirely.

The industry isn't not quite there, notes Jeff Schuster, senior vice president of forecasting at LMC Automotive. He says manufacturers are still sorting out how to avoid features that could confuse or unintentionally distract drivers.

Schuster says educating dealers and consumers is a big part of the solution The good news, he adds, is that improvements are evolving quickly.
