BMW Invests in Street-Level Map Data Company

BMW AG’s i Ventures unit has made an unspecified investment in Mapillary AB, a Swedish company that uses computer vision to extra street-level details from high-definition maps.

Mapillary says it has identified more than 22 billion objects in 190 countries. It will use the investment to expand it staff, develop its core technology and enhance its infrastructure.

BMW praises Mapillary as an independent provider, whose platform can be shared by multiple companies. The carmaker notes that data sharing will be critical in maintaining accurate maps used by self-driving vehicles.

Mapillary’s platform can process and extract data from street-level images captured with virtually any type of camera. Its crowd-sourcing approach results in a resource for high-definition maps that is not dependent upon the type of sensors used to collect the data itself.
