Daimler, Renault-Nissan Eye More Joint Projects

The Renault-Nissan alliance and Daimler AG may expand the partnership they launched in 2010 to include new technologies.

With the ongoing transformation to new mobility systems, Renault-Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn tells reporters at the Paris auto show there are many areas of potential cooperation. He points to emerging autonomous and connected car technologies, and to growing demand for electrified vehicles.

Daimler CEO Dieter Zetsche cites next-generation EV technology as a possible area to explore. He says it would be advantageous for the companies to work on different battery chemistries, then share their findings.

Daimler and Renault-Nissan have cooperated on several projects since 2010, including engines, compact cars and a pickup truck for Mercedes-Benz. But the partners reportedly halted co-development of a small luxury car in July due in part to shifts in consumer demand from cars to SUV/crossovers and trucks.
