HERE Agrees to Buy Advanced Telematic Systems

HERE Global BV, the European digital mapping company, says it will acquire Advanced Telematic Systems GmbH, a German provider of systems that provide secure, wireless software updates to vehicles.

Amsterdam-based HERE was acquired from Nokia Corp. in 2015 for €2.8 billion by Audi, BMW and Daimler, largely to prevent Apple or Google from taking control over the highly accurate vehicle location technologies that will be required by autonomous vehicles. Several other companies, including Intel, have since invested in the company.

The ATS purchase is expected to be finalized early next year. Terms were not disclosed. HERE says merging ATS’s highly secure “over-the-air” capabilities will enhance its market position as a future provider of cloud-based services for self-driving vehicles.
