Lyft Expands 30-Day Pilot Program

Ride-hailing giant Lyft Inc. says it has received more than 150,000 requests to participate in its “Ditch your Car” program, which the company will launch next week in 35 cities across the U.S.

The company plans to select about 2,000 people for the month-long initiative. Participants will receive credits to use alternatives to their personal vehicles.

During initial tests last month in Chicago, 100 people were chosen for the scheme. They received $550 in credits from Lyft, Zipcar rentals, Divvy bike-sharing and passes for more traditional public transportation such as buses and the subway.

The bundled package will vary in other cities based on availability. In addition to encouraging people not to own private vehicles, Lyft hopes the program will promote ride-sharing services. The company aims to increase the proportion of multi-passenger (Lyft Shared) rides to half of its business by 2020, compared with about 35% today.
