Neumann Joins Apex.AI Board

Longtime industry veteran Karl-Thomas Neumann has joined the board of directors of Apex.AI Inc., a San Francisco-based startup that specializes in open-source software for self-driving vehicles.

Neumann headed General Motors Co.’s Opel unit before it was sold to PSA Group in 2017. He also led Volkswagen’s China operations and was CEO of supplier giant Continental in 2008-2009.

In April 2018, Neumann joined the board of electric car startup Evelozcity. He will continue to work for that company, now renamed Canoo, which plans to launch four EV models by 2022.

Apex.AI was founded last November by former Bosch engineers Jan Becker and Dejan Pangercic. The company has raised $16 million from the venture capital arms of Airbus and Toyota.

The company’s first-generation software is being used by researchers at Amazon, Intel and Microsoft. A second-generation system, which expected to be completed by year-end, is designed to help carmakers and suppliers improve safety-critical functions of their autonomous-driving vehicles.
