Report: VW Plans €18,000 Electric Crossover

Volkswagen AG is finalizing a plan to add a small crossover vehicle to its “I.D.” family of all-electric vehicles, sources tell Bloomberg News.

The €18,000 ($20,400) subcompact vehicle is likely to go into production in late 2019 at VW’s plant in Emden, Germany. The facility reportedly will be retooled specifically for EVs. Bloomberg’s sources say VW hopes to sell 200,000 of the little crossovers per year.

The company’s first I.D. model, the Neo hatchback, will go into production at VW’s plant in Zwickau, Germany, late next year. That car is expected to be priced at about €23,000 ($26,100), making it comparable in cost to a small diesel.

Bloomberg’s sources say the Neo’s simpler electric powertrain will enable the car to be produced in roughly half the time required to assemble a VW Golf hatchback.
