Tesla Names President for Automotive Operations

Tesla Inc. has created the new position of automotive president and appointed Jerome Guillen, 46, to fill it.

The move is expected to give CEO Elon Musk needed relief on automotive operating matters and perhaps curb his erratic behavior over the past several months. Musk’s most recent stunt occurred last week, when he appears on a live podcast sipping whiskey and trying a marijuana-laced cigarette.

Pundits describe Guillen as the carmaker’s fix-it expert. They praise his ability to accurately manage multiple ultra-fast-paced programs simultaneously.

Guillen, who headed business development for Daimler AG a decade ago, joined Tesla in 2010 as program director for the company’s flagship Model S electric sedan. His responsibilities have since expanded to general sales, service and vehicle delivery. He also leads Tesla’s Semi heavy-duty electric truck program.

Earlier this year Guillen led Tesla’s effort to set up a production line for the company’s Model 3 sedan in a huge tent adjoining Tesla’s assembly plant in Fremont, Calif.
