Waymo, Safety Groups Launch Ads to Tout Driverless Cars

Alphabet Inc.’s Waymo autonomous-driving unit and a trio of safety organizations are launching a “Let’s Talk Self-Driving” ad blitz to promote the safety benefits of robotic cars.

The campaign will include digital, billboard, radio and fuel pump advertising spots. Among the messages: A world full of autonomous cars would eliminate most drunk driving fatalities and give the blind greater access to personal mobility.

Joining Waymo in the promotion are the National Safety Council, Mothers Against Drunk Driving and the Federation for Blind Children. The campaign began today in Arizona, where Waymo currently is testing self-driving car technology on pubic roads.

Multiple surveys find consumers intrigued by the idea of robotic cars but wary about trusting them with complete control. Waymo CEO John Krafcik says the campaign will attempt to show how technology can help solve some of driving’s biggest safety challenges.
